Sports Injury and Physical Rehab

Physical rehabilitation techniques are employed to recover lost function, improve muscle activation, heal injured tissues, correct dysfunctional movement patterns, and promote core stability. Whether you require post-surgical rehab, injury rehab, or functional rehab due to deconditioning, at Integrity Chiropractic in Mary Esther, FL, we can provide it.

Dr. Leatherman has over 150 hours of post-doctoral training and certification* in Sports Injuries diagnosis, sports injury rehab and management from the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (ACBSP - {CCSP}).  Additionally, he has over 500 hours of training and certifications* in auto crash injury and auto crash rehabilitation from The Spine Research Institute of San Diego (SRISD), The International Chiropractic Association (ICA - {CCST}) and the American Academy of Motor Vehicle Injuries (AAMVI).

*Although the CCST, CCSP, fCBP, MPI, AAMVI and SRISD post-doctoral certifications are highly recognized throughout the country, the Florida Chiropractic Board WILL NOT recognize a certification that is not a diplomate program. The board requires the following: “The specialty recognition identified herein has been received from a private organization not affiliated with or recognized by the Florida Board of Chiropractic Medicine”. Section 64B2.

CBP Trained

Chiropractic BioPhysics

Integrity Chiropractic is among a handful of chiropractors in Florida who have trained and become certified* in Chiropractic Biophysics.  In fact, successful completion of the CBP basic coursework and certification exam is a requirement for all treating doctors in the Integrity Chiropractic Office.

What is Chiropractic BioPhysics?

Chiropractic BioPhysics is a highly-advanced, scientific, and proven chiropractic technique that corrects and restores your spine back towards the published normative alignment values and alleviates pain and discomfort from its source.

CBP combines biology, physiology, physics, geometry, and anatomy to identify the causes of your pain, discomfort, loss of mobility, and altered health. That means your diagnosis – and treatment – will be based on sound scientific and chiropractic principles.

What to Expect from a CBP Chiropractor?

Integrity doctors start with a scientifically-based orthopedic and neurological examination of your spine and joints, posture screening, spinal alignment, and function – often involving x-rays to pinpoint the root cause of your spinal misalignment. Once the source is identified, your doctor will create a carefully planned series of adjustments, exercises, and a spinal remodeling program to create more function and put you on a pain-free road to better health.

How is CBP Different?

Unlike regular chiropractic, which mainly focuses on immediate pain relief, CBP goes one step further to correct the problem's source. That's why most patients under the care of a CBP doctor not only report relief from pain and discomfort, but as their posture begins to align, they may notice other conditions clearing up as well.

Spinal Alignment

Correct posture is at the core of the Chiropractic BioPhysics method of treatment. The curves in your spine act as levers, shock absorbers, and resistance to gravity; they also protect and reduce forces acting on the spinal cord and nerve tissues. But gravity, age, poor posture, improper physical activity, injury, and disease can all play a role in the degradation of your spinal curves and, as a result, your entire body.

CBP can help restore that balance.

Following a scientific analysis of your posture and the curvature of your spine, a treatment plan is developed, based on your deficits, to restore proper alignment, relieve pain, and improve function.

Your treatment plan may include a variety of tested and proven CBP techniques, including adjustment, exercise, traction, or what is termed 'Spinal Remodeling.'

Restoring Your Health

Your spine houses your nervous system – the most delicate and important organ system – responsible for your day-to-day bodily functions. From your immune, cardiovascular, and digestive system to sexual function and mobility, your nerves send vital information and energy from the brain to your organs through your spine.

Just as a kink in a garden hose can dramatically reduce the flow of water coming from the tap – a spine out of alignment dramatically reduces vital information going from your brain to vital organs. Thus, your organs are much more susceptible to malfunction and disease.

It's not just a coincidence that people with poor posture tend to lack energy and suffer from fatigue, experience random aches and pains, as well as suffer from headaches/migraines, allergies, ear infections, sleeping disorders, gastrointestinal issues (such as GERD), asthma, high blood pressure, etc.

As a CBP patient, you will notice a dramatic decrease in pain, discomfort, and, more importantly, a sense of restored health and energy.

Pregnancy & Chiropractic

Physical changes are rapidly occurring in pregnancy to accommodate a growing baby.  Hormonal changes, weight changes, structural changes and mobility changes all occur.  The abdominal muscles also weaken which can further affect spine issues. Pregnant patients often have ligament laxity due to the hormone relaxin being released and notice new onsets of pain and dysfunction in this transitionary time of life.

Neck and back care during pregnancy is safe, gentle, and reduces pain. Unique tables are utilized to allow room for a developing baby and increase comfort for the mother. Studies have also found that chiropractic care in pregnancy reduces overall labor time. A study of chiropractic care and pregnancy showed a decrease in labor times by 24 percent in first births and up to 33 percent for second or third births! (The effects of chiropractic treatment on pregnancy and labor: a comprehensive study. Fallon J. Proceedings of the world chiropractic congress. 1991; 24-31.) A follow-up study corroborated those findings and reported in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics in 2004.  It found that women who received chiropractic care during pregnancy had a 25% shorter labor time than women who did not receive chiropractic care.

Women with a breech or occiput posterior presentation can also be helped with the Webster technique. Treatment helps to balance the pelvic basin and align ligamentous structures for a more straightforward birthing process.  Additionally, the Integrity doctors have created pregnancy specific rehab protocols that are designed to regain motion, mobility and increase stability and strength for the pregnant woman.

DO I NEED A REFERRAL FROM MY OB/GYN? The quick answer is NO, however, we do get many referrals from local OB's and it is always important to have an open line of communication between your chiropractic team and your prenatal team. Our goal will always be ... healthy mom, healthy pregnancy, healthy birth and healthy baby!

Chiropractic and Nutrition

Whole and organic foods are always the best way to provide your body with what it needs to function properly, but many times nutritional supplementation is needed. In times of physiological stress, toxicity and injury, nutritional supplements are helpful for biochemical repair and function. We typically include a few essential nutritional products with every treatment plan to aid in faster healing times.

We only use whole food and pharmaceutical-grade products from trusted manufacturers with strict quality control measures such as Innate Choice, Designs For Health, Standard Process, Biogenesis, Xymogen, QuickSilver Scientific, Medi-Herb, and Nutura.

If a more comprehensive need is found through the history and clinical examination, those patients are referred to Dr. Sarah Leatherman for a more complete metabolic work-up.
